About the Book

Illinois State Senator Rickey Hendon pulls no punches when he writes about how to organize and manage a successful political campaign.

Rickey Hendon is a Democratic state senator from Illinois’ fifth senatorial district, located on the west side of Chicago, and has served as assistant majority leader in that chamber for the last ten years. As a professional politician, political consultant, and active campaign manager for numerous political contests, Hendon brings his considerable insider’s perspective to bear in this lively and informative book. He pulls no punches when he writes about how to organize and manage a successful campaign.

This book could be compared to Sun Tzu’s The Art of War in the methodical approach Hendon takes to the nuts and bolts of all aspects of political campaigns. It is the ultimate political handbook for winning elections, written by someone who has practiced everything he preaches. Hendon has been an elected official since 1988, rising up from city councilman of the 27th ward in Chicago. He has won 16 elections.

Hendon discusses at length the campaign for commissioner of the Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Patricia Horton, against the odds, was elected in 2006. Her successful campaign for this hotly contested office owed much to the tireless and crafty efforts of Hendon. Hendon describes the petition process—getting on the ballot and knocking your opponents off the ballot. He details different strategies for not only beating out the competition, but destroying the competition. Hendon has run many campaigns where there is a huge disparity between the paltry funding his candidates have had, and the vast coffers of their opponents. Yet Hendon wins every time because of his people skills, his dedicated organization, and his remarkable ability to motivate voters.
